Cloud-Based Food Traceability Platform Powers Real-Time Transparency Across Agricultural Supply Chains
- Team size: 5
- Development time: 6 months
Background
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), traceability and supply chain transparency continue to be major priorities in the global agriculture industry. As agricultural products move across multiple intermediaries, businesses increasingly struggle with fragmented data, limited visibility, and inconsistent product origin verification.
For coffee and agricultural supply chains in particular, ensuring transparency from farm to consumer remains highly complex. Products pass through multiple stages, suppliers, and logistics checkpoints, making it difficult for stakeholders to reliably track origin, quality, and handling conditions throughout the process.
To address these challenges, a Singapore-based agriculture company partnered with GEM to build a scalable food traceability platform powered by blockchain and IoT technologies. The goal was to improve transparency, strengthen trust across the ecosystem, and enable real-time visibility throughout the supply chain.
In this project, there were 2 major challenges for GEM’s engineers.
Designing a scalable platform for complex supply chains
The client required a food traceability platform that could:
Processing high-volume IoT data efficiently
This created several technical challenges:
Ensuring data security and stakeholder trust
The challenge was balancing:
To achieve both goals, GEM opted for building a cloud-based platform with seamless scalability and making it accessible via desktop, mobile, and tablets. The whole process needed to be visible to all stakeholders, from upstream to downstream to the end-users.
To maximize data collection efficiency and data transparency, we built a data lake to store and categorize the massive data volume collected from thousands of IoT sensors installed on the farm. Also, we created a dashboard to showcase the outcomes and facilitate stakeholders in tracing all phases of the supply chain.
The project delivered a scalable food traceability platform supporting real-time agricultural supply chain monitoring and product origin verification. Key outputs included:
This project demonstrates how blockchain, IoT, and cloud-native technologies can transform agricultural supply chains beyond traditional tracking systems. By modernising data collection, aggregation, and traceability processes, GEM helped the client create a scalable and transparent digital ecosystem for smarter food supply chain operations.
