RESPONSIBILITIES:
GEM is hiring a Backend Engineer to build and maintain production-grade backend services for a Digital Assistant platform serving thousands of internal sales agents and customers.
You’ll develop APIs and tools that power AI-assisted workflows, enabling the assistant to complete real-world tasks for end users.

- Design and build backend APIs/tools powering the Digital Assistant
- Translate business requirements into clean, scalable API solutions
- Work with TypeScript, Node.js, Python, Next.js, tRPC, PostgreSQL & Azure
- Integrate internal data sources and downstream systems
- Build event-driven services using Azure and/or Kafka
- Write tests, monitor performance, and troubleshoot production issues
- Collaborate with DevOps, QA & Engineering teams
- Manage multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment
- Follow internal CI/CD and ticket-based development processes
REQUIREMENTS
- ~4 years of professional Backend Development experience
- Strong TypeScript / Node.js
- Working proficiency in Python
- Strong PostgreSQL / relational database experience
- Experience with ORM
- Familiarity with Cloud deployment
- Good understanding of API design & best practices
- Comfortable working in a small, collaborative team
Performance & Scalability
- Strong understanding of Node.js concurrency & async I/O
- Experience with PostgreSQL performance tuning
- Familiar with Redis / caching
- Understanding of API performance optimization
- Experience designing scalable backend services
- Familiarity with async / queue-based architectures
- Ability to profile and troubleshoot performance bottlenecks
Tech Stack
- Experience with Kafka
- Experience building integrations or plugins
- Exposure to Databricks
- Insurance, fintech, or regulated-industry experience
