Background
The rapid growth in traffic volume in metropolitan areas has created an enormous pressure on transportation infrastructures and adversely affected logistics businesses. They face many challenges such as recurrent delays, late arrivals, and a spike in exhaust emission.
In addition, traffic congestion also causes soaring fuel costs and diminished operational efficiency.
These two challenges, first, put logistics companies at the risk of being penalized for violating emission regulations in their countries. Second, their financial burden is also inflated due to inefficient operations.
To address them, our client, a logistics company operating in Japan and Denmark, leveraged IoT and Blockchain technologies to develop a smart management system that that can cater to their logistics, administrative, and environmental needs.
The client’s demand was to build a Blockchain platform that collected data from tens of thousands of IoT sensors on their vehicles. Afterward, the collected data would be analyzed for better vehicle management. Also, data on CO2 emission is collected and made public to prove regulation compliance. The project’s ultimate goals are to optimize delivery routes and time and to control fuel consumption and CO2 emissions during transportation.
The system, according to the client, needed to:
In this project, GEM built the back-end system to store data from the IoT-based sensors. To ensure it meets the client’s abovementioned requirements, our team made sure the system was cloud-based and accessible via both desktop and mobile devices.
To ensure robust performance and scalability, the system was designed with advanced data analytics capabilities, allowing for the processing and analysis of vast amounts of sensor data to optimize logistics operations. Furthermore, GEM’s team used machine learning algorithms to enhance. Machine learning enabled predictive maintenance and anomaly detection, thereby preventing potential issues and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery.
With GEM’s assistance, the client successfully created a vehicle management platform that:
The system has renovated vehicle management and operations for our client and helped them address emission-related concerns.
The system was launched successfully to realize the clients’ goals. The company later moved to the next phases of scaling up the system to ensure its functionality and values in the long run.
Through meticulous planning and execution, GEM delivered a robust and scalable platform that not only met the client’s immediate needs but also laid the foundation for future growth and sustainability.
This case study exemplifies the transformative potential of innovative technologies such as IoT and Blockchain in addressing complex challenges facing modern logistics operations. As we advance, embracing these tools will be pivotal in shaping a more sustainable and effective ecosystem in the domain.
