One of the most formidable challenges faced during the project was the short time frame for the app’s development and implementation compared to its technical requirements. Therefore, the project required meticulous planning and execution from our team so that quality or functionality was not compromised.  

Additionally, the integration of the app with the client’s existing comprehensive website content presented another significant hurdle. The client, being a large firm, had well-established website content. Therefore, ensuring compatibility and efficient functionality between the new app and the pre-existing website was not an easy task.

Background 

In recent years, the integration of technological advancements into the medical industry has revolutionized how health data is managed and utilized, thus significantly enhancing patient care and operational efficiencies. 

ChartNotes epitomizes this innovation by providing a secure, private, and user-friendly application for iOS devices, aimed at managing personal medical records and facilitating personalized health consultations. This case study explores the development and implementation of this solution to highlight the potential of digital tools in improving healthcare delivery and outcomes. 

 Challenges 

There were three major challenges GEM’s team hoped to resolve in this project. 

First, we took over the project after another development team’s unsuccessful effort. Therefore, we had to deal with many problems in terms of functionalities and take time to familiarize ourselves with the system.  

Second, given that the solution was meant to serve users in a field known for its urgent nature, it had to work impeccably. Data, updates, and notifications must be sent to users’ devices swiftly and accurately in case of emergencies.  

Three, the solution’s involvement of many different medical stakeholders (patients, doctors, physicians, pharmacies, schools and companies) meant the development team needed to ensure communications among them were rapid and frictionless.

Solution

After thorough investigation, GEM’s team resolved all the issues caused by previous mistakes in development and brought the solution to full functionality. In addition, by leveraging encrypted cloud backups, we achieved the dual goals of protecting sensitive medical data and making sure data across different devices are quickly synchronized in case of abruptly losing internet connection.

Output 

The solution was successfully launched with steady performance and the powerful ability to provide users with secure access to their health data and rapid medical insights.  

Its key functions included: 

  • Saving multiple profiles in one device or account (For example, children’s records can be stored along with the primary user) for greater convenience and insights 
  • Keeping track of medications, vaccinations, eye prescriptions, and other relevant health information 
  • Connecting with pharmacies to help them provide accurate vaccination and prescription services to individuals 
  • Sending notifications of revaccination time 
  • Printing or emailing a record to the school or HR department in case of compulsory health checks

ChartNotes has yielded the following positive impacts on healthcare delivery and patient outcomes:

  • Support for educational and professional requirements: Users can easily fulfill school or work health requirements by directly printing or emailing medical records from the app. 
  • Personalized health Insights and reminders: ChartNotes provides personalized health insights and reminders, hence promoting proactive health management.
